G+T appoints partner from Pinsent Masons
National law firm Gilbert + Tobin has hired a partner from BigLaw rival Pinsent Masons for its energy and resources team in Perth.
George Varma has joined G+T from Pinsent Masons, where he served as a partner for nearly five years and led its hydrogen practice.
Mr Varma specialises, G+T said in a statement, in renewable energy, infrastructure, mining, oil and gas, CCUS and synthetic fuels and brings extensive experience in the Asia-Pacific region and has expertise in structuring and delivering greenfield hydrogen and emerging technology projects.
The appointment strengthens the national firm’s Perth office, G+T proclaimed, “bringing front-end construction expertise, and ensures that clients have access to market-leading support locally at every stage of their project’s life cycle”.
The news follows G+T’s taking of a restructuring and insolvency team from Clayton Utz, as reported earlier this month, as well as its naming of four new partners and seven new special counsel in June, its appointment of a counsel from Ashurst as a new partner in August, and its hiring of a financial services partner from the same firm in April.
Mr Varma joined G+T on 11 December, and it marks the firm’s second lateral partner hire this financial in Perth.
G+T partner-in-charge in Perth, Tim O’Leary, said: “We are delighted to welcome George to the energy and resources team.
“His appointment is the second strategic lateral hire for the office this financial year and grows the Perth partnership to 10 partners.
“George’s expertise adds a local, front-end construction capability and enhances our ability to service the full life cycle of WA-based mining and energy projects. He brings additional firepower to our strong clean energy and decarbonisation offering.”
Mr Varma added: “I am pleased to be joining the energy and resources team in Perth.
“I look forward to assisting WA-based clients with their most complex transactions.”
