The new appointments of Matt Couper and Jonathon Wood – both of whom have extensive merger and acquisition experience in Australia and London – bring the partner count to 140 across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra.

Mr Couper joins Thomson Geer’s Brisbane office and has more than 15 years of experience advising clients on M&A, investments, joint ventures, structuring, due diligence and general corporate matters. As well as working for top-tier and “magic circle” firms in London, he has also worked as in-house counsel for an international investment bank. Mr Couper was also a finalist in the 2022 Lawyers Weekly Partner of the Year Awards in the mergers and acquisitions and corporate categories.

Mr Wood is based in the Thomson Geer Sydney office. He has also worked for leading firms overseas and has significant experience working with clients around the world across a range of sectors, including banking and financial services, insurance, retail, technology and telecommunications.

Thomson Geer chief executive partner Adrian Tembel welcomed the two new partners to the firm.

“Matt and Jonathon will add depth to our private markets and private equity offering and consolidate the strong collaboration between our Sydney and Brisbane teams,” he said.

“They will be valuable additions to our M&A team, and I look forward to the contributions they make to the firm. Our M&A practice has been growing strongly for a number of years, which is reflected in the most recent findings by M&A tracker Mergermarket.”
