Meridian Lawyers – which was established in 2004 and has over 200 staff and 30 principals in offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Newcastle, Brisbane, and Perth – has entered a strategic alliance with one of Singapore’s oldest law partnerships Donaldson & Burkinshaw LLP.

The Singaporean multi-service firm was established in 1874 and will mark its 150th anniversary next year.

The alliance will, the firm said in a statement, enable clients from both firms to benefit from the combined insurance, health law, and commercial resources and expertise offered by both practices and allow the businesses to collaborate on select matters and pursue strategic opportunities together.

The news followed the recent combinations that fellow BigLaw player Dentons has entered into with Link Legal in India in October of last year and PJS Law in the Philippines in March.

Meridian managing director Paul Baker (pictured) said: “We are thrilled to be affiliated with a firm of D & B’s heritage and profile in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Their strength in the areas of insurance, health law, intellectual property, disputes, corporate and commercial, and real estate legal services, exemplary client service, and affiliations with leading global, regional and local professional organisations, will enable us to provide further specialist sector support to our clients with an expanded competitive Asia Pacific offering.”

Donaldson & Burkinshaw senior partner Eric Tin added: “My partners and I are deeply honoured and privileged to be able to build strong ties with Meridian Lawyers – a leading and rapidly growing firm with an impressive track record.

“This strategic alliance will benefit our Asia Pacific clients who need high-quality legal services for their investments and business in Australia. We also look forward to the sharing of knowledge and best practices that come with this alliance.”

The two firms will operate independently of one another and the alliance will commence on 1 September 2023.
