The 23rd annual Australian Law Awards ceremony was held tonight (Friday, 11 August 2023) at the Star in Sydney, where legal professionals and firms gained national recognition for their dedication to the legal sector.

A total of 40 winners walked away with trophies this year, including winners across 39 submissions-based individual and group categories and the recipient of the Excellence Award (given to the highest-scoring individual winner).

This year, the Excellence Award was presented to Anika Valenti – senior associate at Terri Janke and Company – after she was named Senior Associate of the Year earlier in the evening.

Lawyers Weekly received a record 1,005 submissions for the awards this year, out of which 365 finalists were chosen to compete for the awards.

The Australian Law Awards is an unparalleled awards program that recognises legal professionals and firms that have worked tirelessly to propel the legal profession forward.

Over 900 members of the legal profession were in attendance at the ceremony tonight, where they cheered their peers, celebrated their achievements, and networked with leaders in the legal profession.

Australian stand-up comedian, actor, and television and radio presenter Dave Thornton assumed emcee duties and provided light and laughter throughout the evening.

The awards ceremony celebrated the achievements of professionals across the legal industry, including managing partners, general counsel, barristers, legal scholars, and rising stars. It also champions legal teams, firms with the best wellness initiatives, mentors, students, innovators, and Indigenous leaders.

The winners were determined by a panel of highly-respected judges and provided peer-reviewed recognition of the capabilities of those in the legal profession.

Lawyers Weekly editor Jerome Doraisamy said: “The annual Australian Law Awards is the biggest and best celebration of legal talent in the country, bar none.

“Being a finalist, or winning, at the ALAs is a huge feather in the cap for legal professionals of all stripes. All those who have made it to tonight’s event should be enormously proud of themselves.

“It is our honour to acknowledge and celebrate the breadth of talent in the Australian legal profession, and we can’t wait to do it again next year.”
