The Legal Innovation & Tech Fest is coming to Hilton, Sydney on 1-2 May 2023. Combining exhibitors sitting on the cutting edge of legal technology and beyond, and speakers with highly respected thought leadership and industry experience, the networking opportunities it represents alone are more than worth the asking price.

Within this celebration of the talent, technology, innovations, and ideas transforming the way law firms and in-house teams operate, there have been some amazing new speakers announced. These include keynote speaker Dr Tiberio Caetano, Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s Dawson Liu and King & Wood Mallesons’ Michelle Mahoney.

Dr. Tiberio Caetano serves as the Chief Scientist at Gradient Institute. A distinguished machine learning researcher and leader with experience working in Brazil, Canada, France, and Australia, he spent a decade as a machine learning researcher at NICTA (now CSIRO’s Data61), where he also managed the machine learning research group. With an extensive publication record in premier machine learning research venues, he has mentored numerous students and researchers who have become leading data scientists and academics at prestigious universities and industry labs across Australia, the US, and Europe.

Dr. Caetano will speak on Navigating the AI Revolution: Insights for Legal Professionals to Thrive. Demystifying Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for his audience, Tiberio will highlight their remarkable capabilities and transformative impact on businesses and society. He will delve into real-world examples that showcase AI’s ground-breaking impact on the digital economy and its rapid penetration into more traditional sectors, while addressing the significant societal risks associated with increasingly advanced AI ethics. A highly relevant topic of discussion, Dr. Caetano’s keynote is not one to be missed.

Serving as Director and Associate General Counsel for Legal Department Strategy, Capability and Data; South Pacific Head of Legal Company Secretary at Hewlett Packard Enterprises, Dawson’s presentation will be entitled ‘Escape the “Efficiency” Trap: Build Lasting Capabilities in Your Legal Department.

He will discuss how in-house legal departments of all sizes are constantly told to increase efficiency by deploying automation technology, increasing self-service, and outsourcing work, highlighting the structural limitations, diminishing returns and underutilized tools that many in-house legal professionals see once “quick fixes” and early payoffs are exhausted. He will teach those in attendance to look past “efficiency” as the primary goal and share a tale of success and failures on how HPE’s Legal team built lasting, measurable gains locally and globally, through strategic positioning, target enablement and a selective approach to the technology/data roadmap. This session will be a great opportunity for those legal professionals looking to change or expand their approach to success.

Michelle Mahoney, the Executive Director Innovation at King & Wood Mallesons, is responsible for designing and delivering the innovation strategy portfolio, including legal service design, digital strategy, the application of artificial intelligence, future readiness, and digital transformation within KWM. Michelle will be applying this wealth of knowledge and experience to her discussion of ‘Successfully Navigating a Digital Future with Digital Literacy’.

This session surrounds the foundational skills needed to flourish in an ever-changing, increasingly digital world, helping those in attendance to spot new digital opportunities to do something different in creating value, shaping the solution, and implementing it. Through Michelle’s session, you will gain a greater understanding of digital literacy, develop the skills needed to flourish in a digital world and learn how you can prepare for the future now. This is the perfect session for those looking to expand upon their digital literacy and take advantage of the latest innovations in the digital space immediately and with an eye on the future.
