Jack Brumpton (pictured) is returning to DLA Piper, having spent just over one year at renewable energy company Sun Cable, where he served as a senior legal counsel.

Prior to his stint in-house, Mr Brumpton was a special counsel in the firm’s Brisbane office.

He brings “significant experience” working on projects spanning Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea and other regional jurisdictions.

DLA Piper Australian managing partner Amber Matthews said: “Jack’s most recent work at Sun Cable and the firm’s focus on the energy and resources sector meant he was an outstanding candidate for partner.”

“Jack has advised clients across renewables, oil and gas, mining, and carbon credit projects. With the focus on energy security and transition to renewable energy, we see significant potential ahead for the sector in Queensland and beyond,” she said.

“As a firm, we often see the return of former employees, and Jack is a great example of that. It’s testament to our positive culture, which values in-house and sector experience, and to the opportunities that our global platform provides to young partners building their practice. We’re looking forward to welcoming Jack back into the fold.”

The firm’s head of energy in APAC, Stephen Webb, added that Mr Brumpton’s return to DLA Piper is a “win”, given that its newest partner has played an “important role” in the firm’s longstanding relationship with the government of Timor-Leste and having significant expertise in energy production, generation and transmission projects throughout Australia and the region.

“Jack has an international energy outlook, which is important to our firm. From Australia, we are constantly advising on high-profile and market-leading transactions and disputes both locally and in Asia, often for governments and on matters of significance or first of their kind. The opportunity to act for clients ranging from sovereign governments to innovative disruptors is an attractive proposition, and Jack fits into that work stream well,” Mr Webb said.

Mr Brumpton noted that he is “delighted” to come back to the firm.

“Having worked in private practice and in-house in the energy industry, I believe what DLA Piper offers to the energy and resources sector is unique and market-leading,” he said.

“The firm’s tireless client focus and global reach is a compelling career choice.”
