JWS to open in Canberra with 2 partners from MinterEllison

National law firm Johnson Winter & Slattery is expanding its operations to the capital — its sixth office across the country — with the appointment of two partners from BigLaw firm MinterEllison and one of its own foreign investment and merger and acquisition experts.

Johnson Winter & Slattery — which already has offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane — will now also operate out of Canberra, with the firm opening an office in the capital.

That office will be spearheaded by partners David Moore and Mellissa Lai, both of whom are joining from MinterEllison, as well as JWS foreign investment and M&A partner Marcus Clark.

Mr Moore was, most recently, the head of Minter’s foreign investment and trade team.

Speaking about the firm’s expansion into Canberra, JWS managing partner Jeremy Davis (pictured) said that there is much excitement about the firm’s broadening national presence.

“Foreign investors are confronted with an increasingly complex regulatory environment and that has changed the scope of their legal requirements,” he said.

“Given our firm’s strong focus on inbound investment, it is a logical step to build out a team in Canberra with three of the leading foreign investment/M&A lawyers in the Australian market.

“The development will enhance our position as a go to firm for foreign investors looking to navigate complex foreign investment, competition, tax and trade-related issues.”

The start date for Mr Moore and Ms Lai is yet to be confirmed.

The news follows international firm Wotton + Kearney’s recent expansion into Canberra.
