Herbert Smith Freehills has promoted the largest number of Australian senior associates since 2015, in a move the firm said was a result of continuing to “strongly invest in its people and their careers”.

Effective 1 July, 56 lawyers will be promoted to senior associate positions across the firm’s Brisbane, Sydney, Perth and Melbourne offices.

The firm’s new Australian senior associates are Hudson Archer, Anjelica Balis, Jennie Bian, Jack Campion, Sam Gonski, Thomas Gooch, Frances Hewitt, Laura Irving, Jasper Johnson, Shan-Verne Liew, James Moorman, Samuel Moran, Emily Reyher, Mark Simkiss, Teresa Sun, Denitsa Vasileva, Stephanie Vizard, Barry Wang, Jennifer Xue, Ling Zhu, Carolyn Harris, Heydon Letcher, Gila Segall, Saloni Sharma, Mila Banovic, Thomas Boban, Emilia Budisavljevic, Luxmy Chandran, Benjamin Davis, Megan Driscoll, Bowen Fox, Rachel Hao, Timothy Kyriakou, Owen Lunney, Brigette Macfarlane, Alison Martyn, Marina Nasution, James O’Hara, Jacob Reynolds, Jonathan Tong, Greta Ulbrick, Katie Bull, Alexandra McPherson, Greta Morand, Shaesta Nand, Christopher Nowland, Betty Huang, Kai Low, Beryl Yan, Michael Bidwell, Roger Kong, Heather Di Pietro, Sophie Volk, Stephen Waddington, Samuel Edwards and Julia Hollis.

This news follows the firm’s partner and counsel promotions, both of which hit double-figures. In addition, 55 per cent of the new senior associates are women – and Herbert Smith Freehills Australia and Asia executive partner Andrew Pike said that the promotions round was part of the firm’s dedication to retaining quality staff.

“You cannot be one of the world’s leading law firms without the world’s best people. And to attract the best people, you need to show them just how serious you are about investing in them and their future.

“We want to help build long and rewarding careers — giving individuals the chance to work with the best partners, on the best work in the market, and supporting them with great development opportunities,” he said.

“These lawyers each bring with them insights, diverse perspectives and a commitment to our clients that I believe is unmatched. For our clients, it means having lawyers with the skills, commerciality, and growth mindset needed to help them navigate current and future opportunities. Our new senior associates should all be incredibly proud of this achievement, we certainly are.”

This news follows a number of BigLaw promotional rounds, including 20 new appointments at Barry.Nilsson., a “record” number of promotions at global law firm Dentons, 46 new appointments with four partner appointments at Holding Redlich, the promotion of 46 at Hall & Wilcox, the elevation of 48 staff at Mills Oakley, the promotion of 21 at Piper Alderman and the addition of 13 new partners at King & Wood Mallesons.
