Leo Cussen Centre for Law alumni have, the provider said in a statement, “distinguished themselves in the service of all aspects of the law and the community since 1972”.

Many, the provider noted, pass on their knowledge to future generations.

“It is through the practical legal training course at Leo Cussen that law graduates begin their journey of building a legal career as a trusted advisor, a whole lawyer,” Leo Cussen penned.

“These awards will recognise the significant achievements of the alumni over the years.”

In conversation with Lawyers Weekly, Leo Cussen executive director Shirley Southgate (pictured) said: “Leo Cussen is a values-driven, for-purpose organisation. We’ve endeavoured to weave into our PLT course, beyond the expectation of technical excellence, an appreciation of the privilege and responsibility that goes with being a lawyer in Australia.

“A responsibility to the community you serve, and the profession you are part of.

“Over the past 50 years we have seen generations of our alumni go on to make extraordinarily positive contributions to the community and the profession. We would like to pay tribute to their achievements, and encourage others to follow in their footsteps.”

The inaugural award will be called the Leo Cussen “Whole Lawyer” Award and will be awarded to the alumnus or alumna who has made an outstanding contribution to the community and to the legal profession.
