G+T partner named new ACCC chair
A senior and founding partner in Gilbert + Tobin’s competition and regulation practice, who has been with the firm for 26 years, has been named as the new chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
Gina Cass-Gottlieb, whom the firm and Treasurer Josh Frydenberg called “Australia’s pre-eminent competition lawyer”, has been named as Rod Sims’ successor and will step into the ACCC chair’s role on 21 March 2022.
In a statement, G+T said that the appointment “is a great honour for Gina and recognises her distinguished career and contribution to competition law and policy in Australia”.
Managing partner Danny Gilbert said: “I am very proud of Gina and the truly talented team she has built around her.”
“As the first woman to lead a major regulatory body such as the ACCC, her appointment confirms Josh Frydenberg’s commitment to diversity and the empowerment of women in the economic leadership of Australia. We warmly congratulate Gina and share with her the joy of her appointment,” he said.
Partner Elizabeth Avery added: “Gina’s brilliance, dedication and hard work will be greatly missed. Under her guidance, she has developed the competition and regulation group to be the biggest and best in the country and has been an incredible mentor to many in the G+T team.
“This is a wonderful appointment for Gina and the ACCC.”
Treasurer Frydenberg thanked Mr Sims “for his dedication and leadership over more than 10 years” as chair of ACCC.
“Mr Sims has made an outstanding contribution to competition, consumer and infrastructure policy in his time at the ACCC, helping to advance world leading reforms including most recently with respect to the digital platforms,” he said.
“I also acknowledge his wider contribution to public policy during his distinguished public service career which spans more than three decades. I wish him well for the future.”
