New Lawyer X legislation introduced to Victorian Parliament
Seven months after the final Lawyer X inquiry report was released, new legislation to ensure recommendations are delivered effectively with the powers of an independent implementation monitor has been introduced to the Victorian Parliament.
If enacted, the implementation monitor would have the necessary powers to oversee and report on the delivery of reforms by agencies responsible for its implementation. Earlier this year, state Attorney-General Jaclyn Symes appointed highly experienced legal professional Sir David Carruthers to the crucial role.
“Today is another significant step towards honouring the findings from the Royal Commission and delivering enduring change,” Ms Symes commented.
“Sir David will play an important role in keeping implementation of recommendations on track as we get on with the job of strengthening our justice system.”
As part of Sir David’s role, he will not only oversee the acquittal of the commission’s recommendations but will also ensure that it generates lasting cultural and structural change. The recommendations directed to the government with three- and six-month deadlines have already been delivered, with others “on track” for future time frames.
The bill builds on the $88 million investment in the Victorian 2021/22 budget to support the implementation of the commission’s recommendations, including more than $2 million to support the work of the implementation monitor.
