Western Sydney Airport reaches next milestone
Global law firm Ashurst has advised Western Sydney Airport (WSA) on a contract that’ll mark the next milestone development for the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport.

Firm: Ashurst (Western Sydney Airport).
Value: Undisclosed.
Area: Finance, construction.
Key players: The legal team advising WSA was led by Ashurst partner Krista Payne with counsel Lixian Liang, senior associates Hannah Freeman and Andrew Higgins, and lawyers Caitlyn Read and Tom Darling.
Deal significance: According to a statement provided by Ashurst, “the baggage handling system is an essential component of the future airport and is being planned and designed with future growth in passengers in mind”.
“It is expected that up to 10 million passengers each year will pass through the airport when the first stage opens in 2026,” the statement continued.
“The inclusion of the Operation & Maintenance Contract in this procurement recognises the value of continuity through construction into operations and represents the first WSA contract of this kind extending beyond the planned airport opening date in 2026.”
Commenting further, lead partner Ms Payne said: “I am thrilled to have led the Ashurst team advising WSA on the Baggage Handling System procurement for Western Sydney International. It is another great milestone in the development of the airport and a very interesting project to have been involved in. Congratulations to the WSA and Vanderlande teams!”
