In the age of COVID-19, the utilisation of cloud technology has become more of a staple in the nation’s legal market, according to Georgia Foster, Relativity managing director APAC.

Speaking to Lawyers Weekly, Ms Foster said the demand for such products, including those offered by Relativity, is likely to continue to accelerate moving forward as more come to realise its benefits.

“We’ve certainly seen a shift even in the last few months as to the amount of companies coming to us to start exploring what it looks like to move into the cloud,” Ms Foster said.

“I would say even outside of the legal industry, there’s been a huge shift in Australia and an increasing appetite to move to the public cloud. And so that as a trend in itself is funnelling down into multiple different business sectors as well as departments within overarching businesses to start to look at, within their own function, what does a public cloud mean to them?”

That being said, Ms Foster noted that “increased security” has to be at the forefront of moving to the cloud.

“There’s been a huge increase in malicious cyber attacks within Australia and the Australian market,” she explained.

“…We are trying to deliver on a vision of cloud native here with RelativityOne, and that’s ultimately what we’re trying to move towards.

“There’s going to be some inspiring change and education as to what that shift from server to cloud looks like, but we certainly are starting to see a much larger appetite for it.”

Combatting cyber criminals

With its cloud-focus, Relativity prides itself on instilling a strong focus on effective cyber-security measures.

The company’s chief security officer, Amanda Fennell, and her team of dedicated experts are responsible for this and along with Ms Foster, plan to roll out best practice education seminars for clients in the Australian market.

“I met with Amanda to get an understanding as to what Relativity does that’s different and can we put our hand on our heart and say that we believe we’ve got world-class security processes and protocols in place to really be able to go out to market and toot that horn, so to speak,” Ms Foster said.

“It became very clear to me that Amanda and the team are right up there in terms of being world-class when it comes to security. I think it’s evident in the fact that we just got FedRAMP Authority to Operate in the US for the US government. And that says a lot when it comes to a tech organisation, providing and being a vendor for the US government.

“When it comes to the education piece, Amanda and I are working to run a series of education seminars for the Australian customers and prospects who want to upskill themselves in terms of what moving to the cloud means to them, and what is the potential risk of not doing that?

“We have obviously seen examples around the world of delaying that decision making process and having it impact businesses. And I think it’s important not only for us to be able to be the thought leaders here and harnessing our US colleagues to do that as well. They really are the forefront.”
