Leaders in law recognised for lifelong commitment to mental health promotion
Leading legal professionals who have advocated the promotion of mental health in the profession have been recognised for their lifelong dedication and contributions.

To celebrate the progress being made in the area of mental health, seven people from across Australia have been recognised for their contribution to promoting and working to treat mental health. Two have made significant contributions to the legal profession, going so far as to dedicate their livelihoods to improving mental health and wellbeing.
Chair of the Australian Mental Health Prize Advisory Group said each of the individuals demonstrated “world-class” contributions by working “selflessly to improve the lives of those experiencing difficulties with mental health” across the country.
Professor Ogloff has spent the last 35 years identifying, advocating and improving the role of mental health treatment in the criminal justice system. He has regularly worked as a clinical forensic psychologist in service development and leadership positions, as a prolific academic and mentor in this space, and as a trusted adviser to the government on matters at the crossroads of mental health and law.
Professor Milroy is commissioner with the National Mental Health Commission and, in 2019, was Australian Football League’s (AFL) first Indigenous commissioner. She had worked extensively with the royal commission and continues to make a difference for children and young people, particularly those with a trauma background.
“In this especially challenging year, we as a community are even more mindful that mental illnesses can affect any one of us,” said Scientia Professor Henry Brodaty from UNSW Medicine’s School of Psychiatry. “They have helped our society by their efforts, creativity and dedication to achieving better mental health in Australia.
“It is wonderful to see so much progress being made in this area.”
