The 2019 AusLSA Sustainability Update has been released, highlighting that Clutz is one of 40 members that contributed to its four key sustainability pillars: people, environmental sustainability, community and governance.

Among the highlights of the firm’s progress in 2019 include it introducing Recognition @ CU and being recognised as a Gold Employer at the 2019 LGBTI Inclusion Awards for efforts made in promoting LGBTI inclusion.

The update also recognised Clayton Utz’s flexible working practices, its female partner representation (currently sitting at 30 per cent) and its training, explaining the firm trained almost one in 8 people this year as Mental Health First Aiders and Mental Health Champions, and appointed its first-ever National Mental Health Manager.

In terms of environmental sustainability, AusLSA recognised Clutz for its focus on being carbon-neutral, having fully offset its financial year 2019 carbon emissions (representing 16,211 tonnes); and its disposal of single use cups across all of its offices.

In terms of community, the update recognised, among other things, the Clayton Utz Foundation as having distributed over $800,000 to community partners and organisations; and its pro bono efforts, whereby more than 42,800 hours of pro bono work were completed in FY19.

Lastly, in terms of governance, AusLSA recognised Clayton Utz as having reviewed and enhanced its crisis management, business continuity and disaster recovery procedures; and having obtained ISO 27001 certification, the international standard for information security, for the fifth consecutive year.

Clayton Utz environment and planning partner and AusLSA co-chair, Brendan Bateman, said it was “encouraging that more firms were seeing the benefits of a collaborative approach to improving the legal sector’s sustainability performance and impact”.

“By sharing knowledge and ideas with each other, and making changes and investing in areas where we know we can do better, AusLSA member firms are showing they have a real and long-term commitment to being better businesses.”
