K&L Gates bolsters energy and infrastructure practice with GC hire

K&L Gates has appointed a new partner to its Sydney-based energy and infrastructure team, who joins the global law firm after departing his role as general counsel of FRV.

K&L Gates confirmed that Matt Baumgurtel was become the latest appointed to the partnership. 

Mr Baumgurtel joins the firm from FRV, where he held the position of general counsel, company secretary and executive director for the Asia-Pacific region. 

Mr Baumgurtel brings 15 years experience to his new role, having advised on numerous energy and infrastructure projects, as well as M&A and cross-border transactions in Australia and throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

He has particular expertise in the renewable energy sector and has represented project developers, sponsors, investors, financiers, and other stakeholders in wind, solar, thermal, transmission, energy storage, and other energy projects, according to a statement from K&L Gates.

“Matt is an innovative and entrepreneurial lawyer with unparalleled commercial and legal experience in the energy, infrastructure, and environment industry,” said Nick Nichola, K&L Gates’ managing partner, Australia.

“His extensive knowledge and experience in solar photovoltaic, oil and gas, power generation, energy policy, and electricity distribution will significantly bolster our capabilities to provide leading edge advice to clients not only in Australia but also across the K&L Gates global platform.”

Commenting on his new role, Mr Baumgurtel said: “I look forward to combining my extensive renewable energy experience with K&L Gates’ leading global energy practice to deliver strategic commercial legal advice to my clients at each stage of the energy/infrastructure asset lifecycle.”
