The Leadership, Excellence and Diversity (LEAD) Scholarship is targeted at students from low-income or refugee families, in rural or remote areas, those who identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander or have suffered illness or setbacks during their schooling.

Individuals who will be the first in their family to attend university or have experienced educational, social or financial disadvantage are also encouraged to apply as there are no definitive or exhaustive requirements.

Launched in 2016, the scholarship was designed to make a UQ law degree more accessible for talented students aspiring to a career in the legal profession and aims to increase the diversity of the law school’s cohort.

Applications for the 2019 intake of the scholarship are open from 6 August to 31 August.

Head of school professor Patrick Parkinson said “one of the major hurdles for financially disadvantaged and regional students is the cost of living while undertaking a full-time degree”.

The LEAD Scholarship provides successful applicants with $8000 each year for up to five years and is funded by The University of Queensland Endowment Fund.

Mr Parkinson said beyond financial support, “LEAD scholars also benefit from dedicated academic mentorship and valuable internship and professional networking opportunities”.

The scholarship provides beneficiaries with a support network and priority access to internships and career planning assistance.
