Top firms for Aus/NZ equity deals named

The top firms in Australian and New Zealand M&A for the first half of 2018 have been released, with 90 per cent of the top ranked equity and rights offerings issuers having an Australian presence in rankings for both volume and deals count.

Bloomberg’s 2018 H1 Global Legal Advisers League Tables has given an insight into the Australian and New Zealand equity and rights offerings market landscape, ranking Herbert Smith Freehills in the top spot for deal volume.

Holding 39.4 per cent of the market share and advising on deals worth US$2.315 billion (approx. AU$3.129 billion), this was a 29 per cent improvement on their M&As volume for H1, 2017 and pulled them up three ranking places to the number one spot.

Sydney firm Kardos Scanlan Pty Ltd came in second, with one deal valued at over US$1 billion (approx. AU$1.35 billion), giving them over 17 per cent of the Australian and New Zealand market share.

The next highest ranking of a law firm with an Australian presence, was fourth, with another Sydney firm, Sidley Austin LLP, holding 6.7 per cent of the market share after advising a single deal to the value of US$394 million (approx. AU$532 million).

Baker McKenzie, Allen & Overy LLP and Jackson McDonald came in on the volume rankings at fifth, sixth and seventh respectively.

Gilbert + Tobin headed up the rankings when categorised by deal count, counting nine deals for the first half of 2018.

Behind them, Perth firm Steinepreis Paganin undertook eight deals in the same period.

Bellanhouse Legal was third with six deals, and Herbert Smith Freehills came in fourth with five deals.

Rounding out the top five was Baker McKenzie with four deals.
