HFW has confirmed it has boosted its Latin American presence by hiring Brazilian lawyer Julio Costa, and entering into what it calls a co-operation arrangement with a newly established firm in the area, CAL.

Mr Costa will take to his new role as HFW partner later this month, where he will work on aviation matters – one of HFW’s core practice areas both internationally and in Australia.

Later this month is also when the “co-operation arrangement” between HFW and CAL kicks off.

CAL was founded by an insurance team from Tauil & Chequer Advogados in co-operation with Mayer Brown (TCMB), which includes Mr Costa and partner Gustavo Lasalvia, and is set to officially launch this month from offices in Rio de Janerio and Sao Paulo.

HFW Sao Paulo partner Fernando Albino will also join CAL with other local colleagues once the new offices are up and running.

This move represents the seventh international merger or co-operation arrangement that HFW has completed since January 2016, including a fully-integrated transatlantic merger, according to a statement from the firm.

“As part of our strategy to be the world's leading law firm to the aerospace, commodities, construction, energy, insurance and shipping industries, we have been investing heavily in the international markets that are most important to those six sectors,” said Richard Crump, global senior partner at HFW.

“Brazil is the world's eighth-largest economy and a key centre for many of our clients.

“Our co-operation arrangement with CAL is another important step in our continued international expansion, and means we are able to provide clients with specialist advice in Brazil and across Latin America."

Speaking to Lawyers Weekly earlier this year, HFW partner and head of the firm’s Sydney office Carolyn Chudleigh shared plans to expand locally in Australia, noting the firm hopes to double its size across its Sydney, Melbourne and Perth offices, collectively, within the next four to five years.

Ms Chudleigh also didn’t rule out expanding HFW’s office count in Australia as part of its growth plans, noting that the firm is "keeping a relaxed eye out for potential opportunities" in Brisbane.
