Jones Day nabs new M&A partner
The global law firm will welcome a new M&A partner to its Melbourne office from 1 August.

Jones Day has revealed that Michael Lishman will join the Victorian capital as a partner in its M&A practice. He joins from Australian investment bank Gresham Partners Limited, where he was a managing director in its Perth office.
Some of his most noteworthy transactions include the sale of Australian Railroad Group by Wesfarmers and Genesee & Wyoming; the sale of Jubilee Mines to Xstrata; acting for HBOS Australia on the sale of BankWest to Commonwealth Bank; the sale of Coogee Resources to PTTEP; the acquisition of 49 per cent of Talison Lithium by Rockwood Holdings; and Apache’s sale of LNG interests to Woodside, the firm noted.
"Michael is an outstanding lawyer and his arrival reflects our commitment to Australia and the importance we place on providing service to our clients on their most complex and significant matters," said Chris Ahern, Jones Day partner-in-charge of Australia/Japan.
"He brings a breadth of experience in various industries across a number of jurisdictions."
Mr Lishman's new role sees him add to Jones Day's M&A practice, which includes Mr Ahern and Mark Crean in Sydney, and Brett Heading and Isaac West in Brisbane. By being based in the firm's Melbourne office, Mr Lishman will work alongside partners across multiple practice areas, including IP partner Lisa Taliadoros, energy partner Darren Murphy and global disputes partner and partner-in-charge of Jones Day’s Melbourne Office Tim L'Estrange.
“In a turbulent commercial and economic environment, Michael has unique experience and perspectives, and we expect he will be a valued advisor to many boards and management teams,” said Mr L‘Estrange.
"In conjunction with our colleagues in Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth, we look forward to working with clients on their most important matters.”
Commenting on his new role, Mr Lishman said: “I look forward to joining the global law firm Jones Day".
“The firm’s reputation for client service is well known and its aggressive expansion in Australia is exciting," he added.
"I look forward to practicing with a cohesive partnership that shares Jones Day’s professional values.”
