Improving legal skills will top the agenda at the 2011 Queensland Law Students Association Conference to be hosted by the Griffith University Student Law Association (GUSLA).
Members of GUSLA have put together a schedule of events for the conference, including the State Championship Legal Skills Competitions which is aimed at giving top students from across the state an opportunity to test and improve their skills.
Representatives from Griffith University, Bond University, James Cook University, the University of Queensland, Southern Cross University, Queensland University of Technology and the University of Southern Queensland will all compete at the event, with teams going on to compete at the Australian Law Student Association Conference later in the year.
The conference will also play host to the inaugural Queensland Law Student Association Social Justice Forum, with Griffith Innocence Project director and co-founder Lynne Weathered as guest lecturer, alongside Jason Murakami and Ronald Behlau from Nyst Lawyers - long-standing partners of the Griffith Innocence Project.
The Dean of Law and Head of School at Griffith University, William MacNeil, said the conference would further embed Griffith's reputation as Queensland's premier research school.
The conference, which is set to be a platform for students to develop professionally and maintain contemporary knowledge of the industry and network with colleagues throughout the state, will also be hosting a council meeting in which pertinent issues facing law students, including the feasibility of creating a legitimate Queensland Law Student Association to represent law students across the state, will be discussed.
