A senior lawyer at the Victorian Government Solicitor’s Office (VGSO) has been elected as the next president of the Law Institute of Victoria.
Katie Miller (pictured), a managing principal solicitor at VGSO, will start her term as LIV president on 1 January 2015. She will replace the current president, Geoff Bowyer, who is also director of Bendigo-based law firm Beck Legal.

Miller was elected to the LIV Council in 2010 and appointed vice-president in 2013. She will take a leave of absence from the VGSO for the length of her presidential term.
Prior to joining VGSO, Miller was a senior lawyer at Australian Government Solicitor.
Commenting on her appointment, Miller said the legal profession is facing a “tsunami of change” over the next five years and needs support in order to capitalise on the opportunities available for the community, the profession and individual lawyers.
One example is adapting to developments in technology. As chair of LIV’s Social Media Taskforce, Miller helps lawyers integrate social media into legal practice.
Miller is also a member of the LIV’s new privacy committee and said privacy protection was a significant issue facing the Australian community.
