Justin Hannebery QC and Julie Clayton will replace her honour Frances Milane and her honour Susan Cohen following their retirement. The former officially commenced his new role on 8 December, while the latter will commence her new role on 25 January 2021.

Mr Hannebery brings a wealth of experience specialising in criminal law and professional disciplinary tribunals, inquests and royal commissions, according to a statement from the office of Attorney-General Jill Hennessy.

Mr Hannebery joined the bar in 1998. Since then, he has appeared in more than 100 jury trials, including criminal proceedings in the Country Court for both the defence and prosecution. He has also maintained senior positions with both the Law Council of Australia and Victorian Bar Council.

Meanwhile, Ms Clayton brings over 20 years’ experience in personal injury and class action litigation.

She joined the profession in 1996 and has specialised in workers’ compensation, professional liability and institutional sexual abuse cases. In addition, she has been the common law judicial registrar at the Supreme Court of Victoria since 2017 and previously held a position as a legal member on the Mental Health Review Tribunal.

“Mr Justin Hannebery QC and Julie Clayton bring extensive experience that span diverse areas of the legal progression – they will make a great contribution to the County Court bench,” Attorney-General Jill Hennessy said.

“I would like to thank her Honour Frances Milane and her Honour Susan Cohen for serving the Victorian community with integrity and fairness for more than 30 years – and wish them the very best for what’s to come.”
