WA Law Society elects new president
An adjunct law professor and barrister from John Toohey Chambers, who took silk in 2002, has ascended to the role of president of the Law Society of Western Australia.

Greg McIntyre SC, who has served as senior vice president for the WA Law Society this year, has been elected president for 2019 by the Society’s members.
He has been an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Notre Dame since 2001 and the University of Western Australia since 2017.
Speaking about his election, Mr McIntyre said he was “delighted and honoured” to assume his new role.
“As president, I will be a strong advocate in support of the recommendations in the report of the Law Council of Australia Justice Project chaired by the Honourable Robert French AC. The recommendations speak of ways to improve the legal system to better provide justice to the 13 identified groups of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged members of our society,” he said.
“I will also maintain an eye on ensuring that legal practitioners are supported in their role as professionals and as guardians of the rule of law.”
Current and outgoing president Hayley Cormann congratulated Mr McIntyre on his election: “I have worked closely with Greg on the Law Society’s council and executive for a number of years and I believe he is ideally suited to the task of representing members of the Law Society and the broader legal profession.”
“I have no doubt that Greg will do an excellent job in continuing the important work that the Law Society does on behalf of the legal profession and the wider community,” she added.
The following were also elected to the WA Law Society’s Council in 2019: Nicholas van Hattem (senior vice president), Rebecca Lee (junior vice president and treasurer), and Nathan Ebbs, Ante Golem, Matthew Howard SC, Joanna Knoth, Shayla Strapps and Paula Wilkinson (ordinary members).
