Qld Bar elects first female president
Rebecca Treston QC has been elected as the new president of the Bar Association of Queensland, becoming the first woman to hold the position.

Both Ms Treston and the new vice president, Tom Sullivan QC, were elected unopposed.
“I have enjoyed a constructive working relationship with Rebecca during her time as Vice President and look forward to working with her in the coming year,” Ms D’Ath said in a statement.
“I would also like to congratulate incoming vice president, Thomas Sullivan QC, who I also look forward to working with.”
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing president, Sandy Thompson QC, for his leadership at the bar this year. I have valued his advice and input on law reform in Queensland and in maintaining the high standards of the legal profession.”
Mr Thompson tweeted his support for the incoming president and vice president, saying: “BAQ is in good hands”.
The Australian Bar Association also congratulated Ms Treston on her appointment. ABA president Noel Hutley SC welcomed the appointment, saying: “Rebecca’s appointment has been received with great enthusiasm throughout the profession."
"She will make a significant contribution to the role and future of the Queensland Bar. We look forward to working with her,” he said.
Ms Treston tweeted her own message in response to the election, saying: “Thank you to everyone for the good wishes. I am thrilled and humbled by your support.
Looking forward to leading the @QldBar as @QldBarPresident.”
Barrister Susie McNeil was more light-hearted in her celebration of the election of the first female BAQ president, tweeting: “Coincidence that in the same week @QldBar elects first female President, the new season of House of Cards with the first female President is released? I think not.”
