New name for NSW bench
David Russell SC will be sworn in as a judge of the NSW District Court and Dust Diseases Tribunal at the end of May.

Mr Russell is an expert in common law and criminal law, appearing in 50 jury trials since he was called to the bar in 1977. He took silk in 2002, and has acted in civil matters numbering in the hundreds for plaintiffs and defendants on matters involving dust diseases, motor and industrial accidents and professional negligence.
“Mr Russell is an outstanding common law, commercial and dust diseases practitioner who will bring considerable skill and experience to the bench,” Mr Speakman said.
“I look forward to Mr Russell’s contributions on the bench, particularly in dealing with cases involving victims of deadly dust diseases who rely on swift and compassionate justice,” he said.
Over the course of his career, Mr Russell has lectured for NSW Bar practice courses, the Legal Profession Admission Board and the Law Extension Committee of the University of Sydney.
The distinguished advocate has presented papers on dust diseases law at conferences in Australia, Greece and France, and is the author of the dust diseases module in a personal injury practice book.
Mr Russell obtained degrees in Arts and Laws from the University of Sydney and is a nationally accredited mediator.
