New president for Victorian Bar
The Victorian Bar has announced a new president and five new council members, tipping its gender balance to more than 50 per cent female.

The Victorian Bar’s 2016 president, Paul Anastassiou QC, announced the election of Jennifer Batrouney QC (pictured) as the new president for 2017.
“The Victorian Bar has more than 100 years of history as the leading source of independent, strategic legal advice, analysis and advocacy,” Mr Anastassiou said.
“I am proud of the challenges we have met and the achievements we have made in the past year. And I am delighted Jennifer Batrouney QC has been elected as our new president, and welcome our new council members.”
Ms Batrouney has a broad practice that includes commercial, administrative, equity, superannuation and charity law.
She joined the bar association in 1991 and took silk in 2000.
She is the president of the Tax Bar Association, director of the Charity Law Association of Australia and New Zealand and director of the Law Council of Australia.
Ms Batrouney is also a member of the Melbourne Law School Advisory Council and a senior fellow of the Melbourne Law School, teaching in the master’s degree program.
“It is an honour to be president of the Victorian Bar, and I am looking forward to continuing the work of our past president and council in fostering excellence among our members and ensuring the bar continues to be a strong, independent and authoritative voice in the legal community,” she said.
“I am particularly keen to work with the bar council, our chief executive officer Sarah Fregon and her team on the implementation of the Victorian Bar’s new strategic plan, with a focus on raising awareness of barristers’ distinctive services and expertise.”
