Kenneth Raphael (pictured) will be based at the Sparkes office in Sydney.
He undertook the general federal work of the Court in Sydney, with circuits to Adelaide, Perth and Darwin.
He retired from the bench in July 2014.
Prior to his judicial appointment, Raphael was a senior litigation and insolvency partner at Ashurst.
“Kenneth’s wealth of experience, both as a judge and as a former partner of firms in Australia and the UK, will enhance the insights our government team provides to our clients,” said Richard Morrison, Sparke Helmore’s Government National Practice Group Leader.
Sparkes has made a number of lateral hires this year, including the formerhead of professional indemnity of Adelaide firm Fox Tucker Lawyers, and insurance partner Chris Wood and his team from Lee & Lyons in Sydney.
The firm also lost Sydney-based financial services partner Michelle Segaert to Squire Sanders in January.
