ICC jurists in Sydney during Congo judgement
The International Criminal Court’s leading jurists will gather in Sydney next week to mark the Court's 10th anniversary.
Two of the ICC’s most senior officials, the President and the newly elected Chief Prosecutor, will be among dignitaries at Justice For All? The International Criminal Court - A Ten Year Review at the University of New South Wales (12-15 February, 2012).
The conference marks a significant milestone for the ICC, the first permanent treaty-based international criminal court established to prosecute genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The conference comes as the Court prepares its first judgment - against former Democratic Republic of Congo rebel Thomas Lubanga. In particular, Justice For All? examines the role and success of the ICC in achieving gender justice and the reasons behind the Asia-Pacific region’s limited engagement in the regime.
Among speakers are the Court’s Chief Prosecutor-elect Gambian-born Fatou Bensouda and ICC President Judge Sang-Hyun Song, who will also deliver UNSW’s annual Wallace Wurth Memorial Lecture on Tuesday, 14 February.
Also attending the conference is the registrar of the Court, Silvana Arbia, as well as the president of the ICC Assembly of States Parties, Tiina Intelmann, and a range of human rights and international law experts.
