AFTER nearly four years as the single head of workplace relations team at Melbourne firm Kliger Partners, Rob Jackson was lured to Melbourne firm Macpherson + Kelly by the chance to filter his workload between three other lawyers during the economic downturn and in the wake of new industrial laws.

The lawyer, who has also worked at Slater + Gordon, said: “It was difficult to service everything effectively when you are the only person late at night and you get five calls and they are all urgent. That became at times quite difficult … you’re only human, there is one of you,” he said.

"There is the declining economy which has meant that employment law has gotten busier, and with the statutory changes introducing the unfair dismissal scheme for small businesses from the 1 July and a whole raft of changes in the workplace relations field, that was a factor to consider moving on. I foresaw that generally the employment law industry is one that would and should be growing.”
