STRENGTHENING THE firm’s position in the Asian markets, Sydney firm Gilbert + Tobin has appointed Julian Courtney-Stubbs as a partner in the firm’s corporate, communications and technology practice.

Courtney-Stubbs joins Gilbert + Tobin from international firm Bird & Bird where he headed up the firm’s Asia corporate group in Hong Kong. He has extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions, private equity, public securities, joint ventures and other domestic and cross boarder transactions, advising clients across the technology, communications, media, banking, e-commerce, life sciences, aviation and aerospace industry sectors.

Managing partner, Danny Gilbert, believes the appointment complements the firm’s new strategic alliance with Chinese firm King & Wood, and will assist with the firm’s growth in Asia.

Gilbert + Tobin has also promoted GST and stamp duty specialist Hanh Chau to the position of special counsel in the firm’s tax group.

Chau first joined the firm in early 2007 from Mallesons Stephen Jacques, where she was a senior associate. Her experience includes advising on the indirect tax consequences of a wide range of transactions such as infrastructure projects, asset and business sales, internal corporate reorganisations, takeovers and initial public offering and major financing structures.
