MINTER ELLISON Rudd Watts have appointed three new senior lawyers, all with considerable international experience.

Tom Fail has joined the firm’s banking and finance team in Auckland. His experience includes advising lenders and borrowers on a range of secured and unsecured financing transactions. He has particular expertise in the finance, construction and commercial aspects of major projects and project finance transactions. Fail was previously at Mayne Wetherell in Auckland and in the past has held senior roles with Allen & Overy in London and Singapore.

Insolvency and financial restructuring specialist James Douglas has rejoined the firm after several years in London working for magic circle and top-tier US firms, most recently as a partner at Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP.

Douglas, who has joined the firm’s insolvency and litigation team in Wellington, specialised in litigation, arbitration and mediation of commercial disputes. In the area of insolvency, he has represented key stakeholders in corporate debt restructurings and has acted for officeholders in major insolvencies.

Richard Wells is an intellectual property (IP) expert who has joined the firm’s Auckland IP team. Wells advises on the protection, enforcement and commercialisation of IP rights and on transactional IP matters.

He has managed both global and regional IP portfolios for multinational companies. His has worked as intellectual property counsel at De Beers and as a managing associate in Linklaters’ IP and technology department in London.

Fail, Douglas and Wells are now completing Law Society requirements to become partners.
