K&L Gates has announced it has hired Matthew Cridland (pictured), who joins the firm’s Sydney office from DLA Piper.

Mr Cridland brings to his new role over 17 years’ experience working as an indirect tax lawyer in Australia, with a particular focus on complex GST matters. He has also advised on customs and state tax matters, including stamp duty, payroll tax and land tax.

Throughout his career, Mr Cridland has advised a broad range of clients across a number of different sectors. This includes sectors such as real estate, financial services, corporate, energy and resources, infrastructure, government, telecommunications and retail.

K&L Gates Australia managing partner Nick Nichola said the firm was pleased to welcome Mr Cridland to the partnership.

“Matthew’s comprehensive understanding of this complex and technical area of law, combined with his highly engaged and commercial approach, will be of tremendous benefit to both domestic clients and foreign companies seeking investment opportunities in Australia,” Mr Nichola said.

“We are very pleased to welcome Matthew to the partnership.”

Mr Cridland said he was attracted to K&L Gates due to the firm’s fully integrated global platform.

“Tax law is complicated, and companies operating across multiple jurisdictions need to understand and comply with a plethora of issues,” he added.

“As a lawyer advising such enterprises, being part of a firm that offers a single, truly integrated global tax service, not constrained by internal barriers, makes eminent sense.

“I’m excited to join K&L Gates and look forward to leveraging the firm’s platform to service both domestic and global clients.”
