The firm has announced that Katherine Whittemore has been promoted to partner in its government practice, while Brendan Charles has been promoted to partner in the firm’s workplace practice.

Ms Whittemore is an experienced litigator with a strong background in administrative and criminal law. Her experience also extends to debt enforcement proceedings, civil penalty proceedings, coronial inquires and intervention order matters.

Throughout her career, Ms Whittemore has regularly appeared in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal, the Federal Circuit Court, the Federal Court and the High Court of Australia for Commonwealth government entities in matters involving statutory interpretation, merits review and judicial review.

Mr Charles has extensive experience as an employment and workplace relations lawyer.

Throughout his career, he has assisted both public and private sector clients across a range of industry sectors. He has also acted in both state and federal jurisdictions.

Sparkes' national managing partner Phillip Salem said he was delighted to announce the appointments.

Starting the year with two internal partner promotions is fantastic,” he said.

“I'm delighted to see our partnership continue to grow through external lateral hires and the development of our exceptional people internally.

“Our now 73-strong and growing partnership is integral to our aim of becoming a world-class Australian law firm.”
