MAJOR MORI, the US Marine appointed to defend David Hicks, received a rousing reception from Australian lawyers in Sydney last week.

Co-hosted by the Law Society of New South Wales and the New South Wales Bar Association, Mori’s presentation on the legality of the US military commission system was met with eager attention by the generously-sized crowd.

It was standing room only in some corners of the Selbourne Chambers, as the passionate yet plain-spoken Mori lambasted the US for its handling of detainees in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, along with the inaction of the Australian Government.

This came amid claims by Federal Attorney-General Philip Ruddock last week that the US had promised a new military commission wouldbe set up by November.
