THE LAW Society of New South Wales has appointed Michael Tidball as its new chief executive officer.

Law Society president June McPhie said she was delighted to have Tidball as head of the largest legal professional association in Australia.

“[Tidball], who has held the position of chief operating officer of the Law Society for five years, recently stepped up to take over the reigns as acting chief executive officer,” McPhie said.

According to Tidball, the Legal Profession Act 2004 reinforced the important role the Law Society plays in representing the profession on both a state and national front.

“The Law Society is an organisation which must remain highly relevant to the needs and requirements of its members and I intend to deliver on this critical objective,” he said.

“I look forward to working with the profession, members and the wider community to ensure the Law Society continues to provide relevant services of the highest standard possible.”

McPhie said that Tidball had already made a valuable contribution in increasing the Law Society’s membership.

“During his time at the Society, [Tidball] has played a pivotal role in the preparations for the Law Society’s successful transition to voluntary membership.” His involvement has secured a positive membership take-up for this reporting year, McPhie said.

The Law Society’s Council strongly endorsed the appointment, “recognising [Tidball’s] important contribution in driving the agenda forward for the national profession and tort law reform in NSW,” McPhie said.

“With extensive experience in management and policy in both the private and public sectors, [he] brings to the position a unique blend of skills.”
