THE FUNNIEST man in law is Derran Moss, winner of the Golden Gavel comedic public speaking competition.

Organised by the Australian Young Lawyers Committee of the Law Council of Australia, the annual event sets out to find the most amusing and articulate young lawyer in Australia.

Moss, a senior legal officer with the Queensland Crime and Misconduct Commission, took out the Queensland competition, before moving on to the national showdown on 2 November in Perth. He won favour with the judges on the subject of “The Biggest Boozer: A Lawyer’s Guide to Marketing”, with second place going to Sarah Gul of New South Wales, and Jeff Hewitt of Western Australia securing the People’s Choice award.

Moss was victorious in Queensland with a speech entitled “Avoiding professional responsibility: Lessons from the Federal Attorney-General”.
