UAE laws now available in English

In what is lauded as a major step towards improving transparency in the United Arab Emirates, the local Ministry of Justice has announced that every federal law passed since the UAE’s foundation in 1971 has been translated into English and will soon be available online. On top of this, the Ministry has begun the lengthy process of translating 1,500 federal court decisions, 500 international treaties signed by the UAE, and 2,000 official fatwas issued by UAE muftis. The plan is to create a centralized, accessible body of case law and statutes in both English and Arabic, The National reported. 

Linklaters forced to pay £5 in damages

The High Court in Britain has ruled that law firm Linklaters acted negligently in advising a telecoms client in 2000. Levicom claimed £37 ($75) million in damages from the Magic Circle firm, and sought to get back £1.7 million in fees it has paid it. It said that through Linklater’s advice, it found itself embroiled in an expensive arbitration. However, Justice Andrew Smith ruled that while Linklaters has been negligent in the deal, it had not caused the client any loss, RollOnFriday reports. The firm got away with having to fork out a fiver.
