GRADUATE VACANCIES and salaries are increasing steadily according to the results of the Australian Association of Graduate Employers (AAGE) graduate recruitment survey, with a majority of positions offered in New South Wales.
It found that vacancies increased 13.9 per cent in 2007, compared to 2006. NSW was the best state for graduate job seekers, with 24.3 per cent of the total vacancies, followed by 21 per cent in ACT and 20.3 per cent in Victoria.
Graduate salaries are also on the rise, having jumped 6 per cent in 2007. The average graduate starting salary for 2007 is $45,700, up from $43,000 reported this year.
The highest average salary is $47,000 for NSW. In bad news for lawyers, the best paid graduate positions for 2007 are in investment banks, mining companies and energy, water or utility firms.
Graduate marketing remained an expensive exercise, with an average of $31,900 being spent by employers. This attracted a median of 785 applications for this year, or 21 for every graduate position offered.
Better news for employers was that more than three quarters of employers kept a minimum of 75 per cent of their 2005 graduate intake, whereas 80 per cent of those who began in 2004 were retained.
