The College of Law (COL) Alumni Association was officially launched last week by two highly esteemed lawyers.

The Honourable Sir Laurence Street AC KCMG QC and lawyer and former world-champion alpine skierZali Steggall OAM launched the association which will give COL alumni the opportunity to renew relationships and re-engage with their professional education goals and networks.

Speaking at the launch, Joe Catanzariti, COL chairman and Clayton Utz partner, commented on the COL's progression in the last decade and Street's contribution to its values.

"Integral to the concept of practical legal training was Sir Laurence's association with The College, as it led to better equality for all law students. Sir Laurence was part of its creation up until he was appointed Chief Justice," said Catanzariti.

As Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of NSW, Street officially opened the COL and its premises in 1974.

In his speech, Street discussed the importance of education for lawyers in their obligations to uphold "truth, honour and integrity".

"A qualification as a lawyer presents many great and challenging opportunities, and opens many doors. Training at the College of Law equips you well to avail yourself to those opportunities as you pass through those doors," said Street.

Steggall, a third-generation lawyer and Australia's first individual winter Olympic medallist and skiing world champion, said her learning at COL was "invaluable" and continues today at the Bar.

"I welcomed the opportunity to put into practice much of the legal theory learnt. The practical approach and flexible programs enabled me to complete the course whilst also working and having a family."

All COL graduates from practical legal training and applied law programs are eligible to join the new Alumni Association as full members. Students may also join as associate members.
