New South Wales Bar Association President Tom Bathurst QC has been appointed as the next NSW Chief Justice.

Attorney-General Greg Smith made the announcement a short time ago today (13 May).

Bathurst will replace James Spigelman, who announced in March that he would step down after 13 years in the role.

"I believe that any organisation needs refreshing and, after 13 years, it also seems an appropriate time for me to personally and professionally refresh myself," Spigelman said at the time.

It is expected that Bathurst will formally takeover from Spigelman on 1 June.
