Rod Hodgson, the lawyer behind Dr Mohamed Haneef's successful compensation claim for wrongful detention, has won the 2011 Australian Lawyers' Alliance (ALA) Civil Justice Award.
A principal and leader of Maurice Blackburn's Queensland practice, Hodgson accepted the award before 340 of his peers at the Sheraton Mirage resort in Queensland last Friday (18 February).
ALA Queensland president Adam Tayler said Hodgson was chosen for the award because of his passionate pursuit of justice and his dedication to ensuring that those most marginalised by circumstances such as personal injury and discrimination were better able to find redress.
"As an advocate providing access to justice, Rod has also been involved in cases that benefit not only individuals but the community as a whole," Tayler said.
"His extensive knowledge of legal process has led to him being successful for many law-changing and leading cases, most particularly the unjust treatment of Dr. Haneef."
