Two hundred Gadens lawyers took on the task of building 51 bikes in Darling Harbour last Friday (11 February) for the students of the inner city Bourke Street Primary School.

As a team building exercise in coordination with YWCA NSW - a not-for-profit organisation which supports vulnerable people at critical periods in their lives - Gadens lawyers were able to help children at risk of dropping out of school, because of a lack of confidence and opportunity, to reach their potential.

"Many of these kids don't have the same opportunities that most of us have. We deliver mentoring programs in schools to develop confidence and behaviour skills and give these kids a positive role model," said chief executive officer of YWCA NSW, Kate Frost.

"A new bike may not fix all their problems but the whole idea demonstrates that the community does care about them - even people they don't know care enough to give them a new bike."

Gadens' head of human resources Sharon Hiserman said the exercise provided a great way to give back to the community while working together in a very hands-on, practical manner.

"It was a wonderful end to our team building day to see the look on both the faces of the kids and our staff," she said.
