The Law Institute of Victoria (LIV) has recognised lawyers who have shown exceptional commitment to victims of sexual abuse, police misconduct, human rights abuses and people with disabilities at today's (5 November) 2010 LIV Legal Awards.

"These awards recognise the outstanding achievements of legal professionals over the past year. I am impressed by the breadth of talent and depth of passion demonstrated by these leaders amongst our 14,000 lawyers," said LIV president, Steven Stevens.

Amongst the award winners was former LIV president Geoff Provis, of Melbourne law firm Russell Kennedy, who was awarded the honorary life membership award.

Provis has worked in banking, insurance and injury litigation, acting for plaintiffs and defendants. He has been a representative on the Law Council of Australia, involved in national legal issues including Legal Aid Funding which is a national structure for the legal profession, human rights and flexible legal business structures.

Also amongst the award winners was Corrs Chambers Westgarth chief executive officer John Denton, who received the Managing Partner Award; Phil Grano of the Office of the Public Advocate who was awarded the Government Lawyer Award; and John Adams of Dawes and Vary who was awarded the Regional Lawyer Award.
