Australia is being promoted as a venue for international arbitration at the International Bar Association's Annual Conference in Vancouver.
Clayton Utz has seven lawyers attending, including infrastructure and dispute resolution partner Doug Jones. As the President of the Australian International Disputes Centre (AIDC), Jones has also been talking up Sydney and the AIDC as a venue for commercial arbitration and mediation.
"I have been very encouraged that many people who operate in dispute resolution from around the world have told me they are aware of the opening of the AIDC in Sydney [on 3 August]," Jones told Lawyers Weekly.
"The Vancouver Conference has given me the opportunity to talk to practitioners from China, Korea and India in particular about the benefits of using Sydney as a neutral venue for arbitration."
Jones has spoken at seminars about international construction and arbitration during the conference, joining other Australia lawyers to feature in the discussions including Peter Bartlett from Minter Ellison, Penny Ward from Baker & McKenzie and Peter Leonard from Gilbert + Tobin.
All areas of the law are covered at the conference, with delegates given the chance to attend sessions on everything from investment opportunities in the Middle-East, to the art of persuasion and how to advise entrepreneurs seeking to raise capital.
