At the recent Australian Law Students' Association (ALSA) Conference in Adelaide, Matthew Floro from the University of Queensland was elected as the new president for 2010-2011, taking over from Jonathan Augustus as of 1 August 2010.
He said the key areas of focus over the next 12 months include improving ALSA's effectiveness on issues of national significance.
"I really want to see ALSA become one of the leading policy development bodies in Australia, focusing on regulatory research and analysis on issues relevant to law students," he said. Floro hopes to build strong relationships with national student law associations abroad, such as the Asia Law Student Association.
In addition, Floro will focus on supporting younger and regional student law societies in tackling the unique issues that they face; enhancing communication between ALSA and law students; and increasing the productivity of the ALSA Council.
The challenges ahead for Floro concern the national legal profession reform and ensuring that the changes made are made in the interests of law students; continuing to address the rural, regional and remote issues that concern law students and the legal profession and advocating for better support for law students in terms of mental health and depression.
