The Australian Law Students' Association's (ALSA) 2010 Conference, which kicked off today (12 July), has for the first time taken on a distinctly green hue.

In an environmentally friendly first for ALSA, the conference will be run under conditions which offset all carbon emissions - at a cost of approximately $4,500.

President of ALSA Jonathan Augustus referred to statements made by the Federal Government's Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts that a sustainable future could not be created without considering and involving young people.

"As one of Australia's leading youth organisations, ALSA is taking the initiative by acting in an environmentally friendly manner whilst organising our activities, releasing our publications and hosting our events," he said.

"ALSA is committed to promoting long term cultural change amongst our generation in order to protect the environment for future generations."

According to ALSA, the calculations for the offsets were made in accordance with datasets provided by the Australian Greenhouse Office's ClimateClever website, and the offsets will gradually be absorbed and sequestered into a biodiverse carbon sink re-vegetation program.

The conference is being co-hosted by Flinders University, the University of South Australia and the University of Adelaide from 12-18 July and will feature The Honourable Gareth Evans AO QC and William Smith, the acting international co-prosecutor at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia as keynote speakers.
