A new legal ethics website has been launched by Queensland Chief Justice Paul de Jersey AC at the Queensland Law Society's 48th Annual Vincents' Symposium in Brisbane.

The website - Australian Lawyers' Ethics (www.ethics.qls.com.au) - is an initiative of the Queensland Law Society (QLS) and aims to provide lawyers and the public with access to ethics information, tools and resources.

QLS chief executive officer, Noela L'Estrange, said the website's national focus represented an important contribution by QLS towards an Australia-wide profession.

"This is an innovation for the legal profession, and with nationally uniform conduct rules on the horizon, the Australian Lawyers' Ethics website will be welcomed by the profession throughout Australia as a 'go to' place for ethics advice and information," L'Estrange said.

L'Estrange said the site was designed to enable lawyers, particularly new and less experienced practitioners, to access a practical and interactive tool to raise and discuss ethical issues.

"Proper understanding and application of ethics is critical to ensuring public confidence in the administration of justice that lawyers meet the standards expected of them by the Court," she said.

The website offers a lawyers' ethical 'compass' plus a facility to blog, the latest ethics news and a self-assessment tool with which law firms can gauge their ethics readiness.
