MEMORIAL HELD FOR TOP SCIENTOLOGY LAWYER
The memorial service for the leading lawyer for the Church of Scientology, Earle C. Cooley, was held recently at the Federal Court in Boston, website legalblogwatch reports.
In attendance were some 500 lawyers and judges, as well as Hollywood actor Tom Cruise.
Cooley died of heard failure last month at the age of 77. He was known for his aggressively litigating against those who took on the church.
ALLEN & OVERY TEST DRIVES OUTSOURCING
Allen & Overy has become the first magic circle firm to outsource legal work, The Lawyer reports.
Under the arrangement with outsource provider Integreon, A&O will outsource basic litigation document review to teams in New York and Mumbai, the deal expected to generate between 30 to 50 percent cost savings.
The firm will outsource on a case-by-case basis, rather than signing a deal for a dedicated team.
LOVELLS/HOGAN MERGER NAME CONFIRMED
Lovells and US firm Hogan & Hartson will re-brand as Hogan Lovells if partners from both firms give the thumbs up to a proposed merger, legalweek.com reports.
The merged firm will retain two operational centres - one in London and one in Washington DC, and the combined firm will be led by Lovells managing partner David Harris and Hogan's chairman Warren Gorell.
CLIFFORD CHANCE SCOOPS NUCLEAR DEAL
Clifford Chance has been appointed by Horizon Nuclear Power - a joint venture between RWE Npower and E.ON UK which will build nuclear power plants in the United Kingdom, The Lawyer reports.
Horizon is expected to invest more than 15 billion pounds developing 6,000MW nuclear capacity by 2025.
The news follows the UK Government's recent identification of 10 sites for new nuclear plants.
LAWYERS CONFIDENCE ON THE RISE
Fifty-eight percent of respondents to a survey carried out by accountancy firm Smith & Williamson are "confident" or "very confident" about the year ahead, up from 50 percent 12 months ago.
The survey also showed that 84 percent of firms have reduced staff costs, or are in the process of doing so, as a result of the economic downturn.
