A law professor from the University of NSW (UNSW) has been appointed chair of the Australian Press Council.

 
 

Professor Julian Disney will step into the role on 1 December, taking over from Professor Ken McKinnon who has held the position since 2000.

Disney is currently a professor with UNSW's faculty of law and director of the university's Social Justice Project. He has extensive experience working in the welfare sector and with various government advisory bodies. This includes the roles of Law Reform Commission, coordinator of the Sydney Welfare Rights Centre, president of the Australian Council of Social Service, president of the International Council on Social Welfare and director of Australian National University's Centre for International and Public Law.

He is also currently the national chair of Anti-Poverty Week and the independent chair of the National Affordable Housing Summit and the Community Tax Forum.

The Australian Press Council comprises representatives of the public and of the industry and acts to preserve the freedom and responsibility of the Australian Press.
